US doing everything it can to keep online casinos at Bay!The US faced a setback after it lost out on a recent decision by the World Trade Organization, which awarded in favour of Antigua and Barbuda. The Caribbean nation was in a long dispute over online gambling laws with the United States. Antigua and Barbuda has a thriving Internet gaming industry and was opposing these gambling laws as a result. The U.S. took the decision very calmly and opted not to appeal. However, the gambling world was in shock when the US decided to rewrite the details of its 13-year-old treaty with Antigua and other dozens of nations. Antigua brought this case to the WTO four years ago because it felt that the American gambling laws had several inconsistencies that forced financial institutions to cut their links with online gambling casinos and sports books. Today, after four long years, the WTO ruled in favour of the Caribbean Nation. Things could have been rectified if the U.S. would have brought its domestic laws in line with its international policy. This could have been done by the US had they eliminated all the exceptions on horse racing and lotto. Deputy U.S. Trade Secretary John K. Veroneau said that "Unfortunately, in the early 1990s, when the United States was drafting its international commitments to open its market to recreational services, we did not make it clear that these commitments did not extend to gambling. Moreover, back in 1993 no WTO member could have reasonably thought that the United States was agreeing to commitments in direct conflict with its own laws." In response to this move, Antigua's Minister for Finance and the Economy, Dr. Errol Cort said "While we had been aware of the possibility of the United States taking such action, we considered it extremely unlikely. It is almost incomprehensible that the United States would take such an action in the face of an adverse dispute resolution ruling. This is going to have very severe consequences for the global free trade movement.”
