Monday May 14, 2007Is Online Gambling under siege in the US?
The U.S. Department of Justice is focusing on offshore gambling operators and tightening its laws. However, the department of justice is keeping online gambling under siege because it is neglecting to pursue illegal online horse racing operators within the United States.
At a press conference on Friday, U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman said that "Virtually all Internet gambling is illegal in the United States, with some exceptions carved out for horse racing." The press conference addressed 34 counts of indictment against credit card processors and offshore operators.
The charges covered a number of issues which included bank fraud, transmission of wagers, racketeering conspiracy and money laundering. On the surface, it appears that everything is fine and proper but in reality this last indictment further confirms the hypocrisy of all the charges.
Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va, who is one of the fathers of the UIGEA said. "This [online gambling] is a scourge on our society. It causes innumerable problems". Goodlatte strongly believes that online gambling destroys families. The hypocrisy of it all is that it appears that online gambling destroys families with the exception of horse racing!
Shelley Berkley, who is a Representative and a Nevada Democrat, said that Goodlatte was a hypocrite because the bill wouldn't block online gambling on horseracing. “He made a deal with the horseracing industry to exempt them from this bill.''
The crux of Goodlatte's policy on online gambling is that it’s immoral to bet online because it’s against certain moral values. However, you can freely bet away your life savings on horse racing as my friends at the NTRA will be happy and once again support my future political campaigns.
Only time will reveal how things unfold in this debate over online and offline gambling regulations!
